25 years ago: may 2000

At this moment, I was still continuing to learn how to be a Rick Steves tour guide. Working with Katie was fantastic because we laughed so much. Tours were 20 days long (for real!), & we saw so much but groups also had more free time. I wonder what it would be like to do the same route now in 2025.

Spain observations: Where are all the people??!! Seriously, where are they? Travellers were lucky to experience so few tourists in those wonderful places back then.

Portugal observations: Not sure why I didn’t take any other pics except of the gorgeous place Katie & I had to share… one of those situations where no other lodging was available, so we took over Casa Saudade for two nights. Amazing that the property looks about the same today, except that marvellous statue of Pan is no longer there. I wonder where he ended up 😉

Morocco observations: Oh, the carpet sellers & the belly dancer. I can’t believe we used to take tour members to see that. I’m very pleased that Tangier is finally receiving the investment it so desperately needed. I haven’t spoken to Aziz in awhile, but check out that small, Greek-registered ferry (a far cry from the gigantic FRS ship now in service)… & those sunglasses.

Gibraltar observations: Amazing that the fence separating Gibraltar from Spain is finally coming down!

Hope you enjoy this glance at the past. Read about the genesis of this project, & please comment below if you remember this time & place.
