25 years ago: july 2001

25 years ago, España, Spain, Sevilla, Puente de la Barqueta, Expo 92

Just one roll of film from this month but with some interesting urban changes. Once again, a strip went missing with a Rick Steves’ tour group photo on it… hope this trend doesn’t continue!

Spain observations: The first three photos are all of the Puente de la Barqueta, likely taken one day after the previous entry of this series. Perhaps the biggest change is that the trees have continued to grow… at least they’ve not been cut down 😉

25 years ago, Portugal, Lisboa, Lisbon

Portugal observations: The remainder of the roll is dedicated to Lisboa! I loved exploring Portugal 25 years ago, as I did my best to practice the language & learn all about its food culture. So few people realized how great Lisboa truly was —even if rough around the edges— & the city captured my heart.

Just look at how the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos shines as restoration progressed. The Monumento dos Descubrimentos would have its turn several years later. Rossio looks a mess, & I honestly don’t remember works on the square or on the monument to Dom Pedro IV. But I do recall that the Castelo de São Jorge was free to walk around at any time of day with hardly any tourists to be found. Nothing like that now. And that entire building beneath the Igreja do Carmo has been demolished & the space is now yet another beautiful viewpoint.

Hope you’ve enjoyed this glance at the past. Read about the genesis of this project, & please leave a comment below if you also remember this particular time & place.
